Former President Mohamed Nasheed has emphasized that Malé has never belonged to a single community, highlighting the capital city’s long-standing history as a hub for people of varied origins.
In a recent social media post, Nasheed reflected on Malé’s multicultural past, noting that a census in the 1750s would have revealed residents from nearby islands and neighboring countries. He added that the city’s population historically included Africans, Malabaris, Turks, and other ethnic groups, illustrating its rich diversity.
Land Allocation and Redevelopment in Malé
Nasheed also spoke about land management policies, particularly the “Veshifahi Malé” programme introduced during his presidency. The initiative encouraged residents to voluntarily hand over inherited plots to the government in exchange for alternative housing or land, paving the way for redevelopment in the densely populated capital.
“Land distribution should continue following the principles of the ‘Veshifahi Malé’ programme,” Nasheed stated, emphasizing that ancestral plots should be exchanged for new housing or land. He noted, however, that recent years have seen little effort to reclaim or manage such plots for redevelopment.
The former president also mentioned the “Binveriya Programme,” launched under the previous Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government. This initiative provides eligible citizens with new land plots, giving recipients five years from allocation to vacate their existing properties.
Growing Debate Over Land Policies
Nasheed’s remarks come amid heightened public debate over housing and land distribution in Malé. The government continues to face pressure as the capital grapples with limited space and rapid urban growth.
The MDP has faced criticism over its decision to grant free land plots to Malé-registered residents during the final days of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration. Introduced as Solih sought a second term, the policy has drawn accusations of political favoritism and exacerbating economic inequality.
As Malé’s population continues to expand, discussions over fair and sustainable land allocation are expected to remain a pressing issue for policymakers and citizens alike.

މާލޭގައި ބިން ބެހުމަށް އެންމެ އެކަށީގެންވާ ގޮތަކީ، އެމަނިކުފާނުގެ ވެރިކަމުގައި ތަޢާރަފުކުރި "ވެށިފަހި މާލެ" ޕްރޮގްރާމް ކަމަށް ނަޝީދު ތަކުރާރުކޮށް ވިދާޅުވިއެވެ. މި ޕްރޮގްރާމުގެ މަޤްޞަދަކީ، މާލޭގެ ތޮއްޖެހުން ބޮޑު ސަރަޙައްދުތައް ތަރައްޤީކުރުމަށްޓަކައި، އެމީހުންގެ ވާރުތައިގެ ބިންތައް ދައުލަތަށް ދިނުމުގެ ބަދަލުގައި، އެހެން ތަންތަނުން ފްލެޓް ނުވަތަ ބިން ދޫކުރުމެވެ.
ނަޝީދު ވިދާޅުވީ، ވާރުތައިގެ ބިން ދޫކުރި ފަރާތްތަކަށް ބަދަލުގައި އެހެން ބޯހިޔާވަހިކަމެއް ދިނުމުގެ އުޞޫލު، މިހާރު ވެސް ބިން ބެހުމުގެ މަސައްކަތުގައި ހިފަހައްޓަން ޖެހޭ ކަމަށެވެ. ނަމަވެސް، މިފަދަ ބިންތައް ދައުލަތަށް އަނބުރާ ހޯދައި، ތަރައްޤީކުރުމަށް މިހާރު އެއްވެސް މަސައްކަތެއް ކުރެވެމުން ނުދާ ކަމަށް ވެސް އެމަނިކުފާނު ފާހަގަކުރެއްވިއެވެ.
ކުރީގެ ސަރުކާރުން ފެށި **"ބިންވެރިޔާ ޕްރޮގްރާމް"**ގެ ދަށުން ވެސް މާލޭ ރައްޔިތުންނަށް ބިން ދޫކޮށްފައިވެއެވެ. މި ޕްރޮގްރާމުގެ އެއްބަސްވުންތަކުގައި ބުނާ ގޮތުން، ބިން ލިބޭ ފަރާތްތަކުން އެމީހުން މިހާރު ދިރިއުޅޭ ބިންތައް، އާ ބިން ލިބޭ ތާރީޚުން ފެށިގެން ފަސް އަހަރުގެ ތެރޭގައި ދޫކުރަން ޖެހެއެވެ.
