Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was honoured today with the Grand Order of the Distinguished Rule of Ghaazee (GODRG) during the official Victory Day Ceremony held at the Social Centre in Malé. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu presented a special commemorative shield to Maumoon and also awarded shields to the families of the martyrs who lost their lives during the 3 November 1988 terrorist attack.
Recognising Courage and Sacrifice
The President’s Office stated that the initiative celebrates Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s leadership and courage, while also paying tribute to the heroism of the martyrs and the resilience of their families. Victory Day commemorates the 1988 attack in which 19 Maldivians—including eight officers of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and 11 civilians—were killed by a group of Maldivians collaborating with Sri Lankan Tamils. The tragedy occurred ten years after Maumoon assumed the presidency in 1978.
Honouring National Heroes
Addressing the gathering, President Muizzu emphasised the importance of remembering those who secured the nation’s freedom. He highlighted historical figures such as Bodu Thakurufaanu, the 16th-century leader who led the Maldives to independence from Portuguese rule, urging citizens to place the nation’s welfare above personal interests.
The President also spoke about the National Service programme, introduced earlier this year, noting strong public support. He revealed plans to train 1,000 Maldivians in 2025, with the same number of recruits added each subsequent year, reinforcing the country’s commitment to civic duty and national defence.
Victory Day Commemorations
The day’s events began with Fajr prayers held in congregation, followed by a flag hoisting and a guard mounting ceremony at the Victory Day Monument. President Muizzu, who serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed were joined by Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Cabinet Ministers, and senior government officials. Upon arrival, they were welcomed by Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon.
The ceremony included addresses by both President Muizzu and Minister Ghassan Maumoon, paying solemn tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of those who defended the Maldives. The commemorations serve as a reminder of the nation’s resilience and the enduring spirit of its leaders and citizens.
ނޮވެންބަރު ތިނެއްގެ ދިނުވާޒީ ދުވަހުގެ ރަސްމީ ޖަލްސާގައި، ކުރީގެ ރައީސް އަލްއުސްތާޛު މައުމޫން އަބްދުލް ޤައްޔޫމަށް "ގްރޭންޑް އޯޑަރ އޮފް ދަ ޑިސްޓިންގުއިޝްޑް ރޫލް އޮފް ޣާޒީ (GODRG)" ގެ ޝަރަފު ރައީސުލްޖުމްހޫރިއްޔާ ޑރ. މުޙައްމަދު މުޢިއްޒު ވަނީ އަރުވާފައެވެ. އަދި 1988 ވަނަ އަހަރުގެ ނޮވެންބަރު 3 ވަނަ ދުވަހުގެ ޓެރަރިސްޓް ހަމަލާގައި ޝަހީދުވި ދިވެހިންގެ ޢާއިލާތަކަށް ހަނދާނީ ފިލާ ވެސް ވަނީ އެރުވައިފައެވެ.
މިކަން ހާމަކުރައްވާ ރައީސް އޮފީހުން ވިދާޅުވެފައިވަނީ، މި ފިޔަވަޅަކީ ކުރީގެ ރައީސް މައުމޫން ޢަބްދުލް ޤައްޔޫމުގެ ހިތްވަރާއި ޤައުމީ ލީޑަރޝިޕަށް ޤަދަރުކުރުމުގެ އިތުރުން، އެ ތާރީޚީ ދުވަހު ޝަހީދުވި ބަޠަލުންނާއި އެ ބޭފުޅުންގެ ޢާއިލާތަކުގެ ޤުރުބާނީއަށް އިޙުތިރާމްކުރުން ކަމަށެވެ. ނޮވެންބަރު 3 ގެ ހަމަލާގައި ޖުމްލަ 19 ދިވެހިން (އެމްއެންޑީއެފްގެ 8 ބޭކަލުންނާއި 11 ރައްޔިތުން) ޝަހީދުވިއެވެ. މި ހަމަލާ ދީފައިވަނީ ރައީސް މައުމޫންގެ ވެރިކަމަށް 10 އަހަރު ފަހުންނެވެ.
ރައީސް މުޢިއްޒު ދެއްކެވި ވާހަކަ (ޚުލާޞާ):
ރައީސް މުޢިއްޒު ޖަލްސާގައި ވާހަކަފުޅު ދައްކަވަމުން، ޤައުމުގެ މިނިވަންކަން ދަމަހައްޓައިދެއްވި ބޮޑު ތަކުރުފާނު ފަދަ އިސް ޤައުމީ ބަޠަލުންގެ ދައުރު ފާހަގަކުރެއްވިއެވެ. އަދި ރައްޔިތުންގެ ކިބައިން އެދިވަޑައިގެންނެވީ، އަމިއްލަ އެދުމަށްވުރެ ޤައުމުގެ މަޞްލަޙަތު އިސްކުރުމަށެވެ.
ނޭޝަނަލް ސަރވިސް ޕްރޮގްރާމް:
ރައީސް ވިދާޅުވީ މި އަހަރު ތަޢާރަފުކުރި "ނޭޝަނަލް ސަރވިސް ޕްރޮގްރާމް" އަށް އާންމުންގެ ބޮޑު ތާއީދެއް ލިބެމުންދާ ކަމަށެވެ. އަދި 2025 ވަނަ އަހަރު މި ޕްރޮގްރާމުގެ ދަށުން 1,000 ދިވެހިން ތަމްރީނު ކުރެވޭނެ ކަމަށާއި، ކުރިއަށް އޮތް އަހަރުތަކުގައި ވެސް ކޮންމެ އަހަރަކު އެ ޢަދަދަށް ބައިވެރިން އިތުރުކުރާނެ ކަމަށް ވިދާޅުވިއެވެ.
ނޮވެންބަރު 3 ގެ ރަސްމިއްޔާތު ފެށުނީ ފަތިސް ނަމާދު ޖަމާޢަތުގައި ކުރުމުންނެވެ. މީގެ އިތުރުން ދިނުވާޒީ ބިނާ ކައިރީގައި ދިދަ ނެގުމުގެ ރަސްމިއްޔާތާއި ގާޑު މައުންޓިންގ ރަސްމިއްޔާތު ވެސް ވަނީ ބާއްވާފައެވެ.
ސޯޝަލް ސެންޓަރުގައި އޮތް ރަސްމީ ޖަލްސާގައި ރައީސުލްޖުމްހޫރިއްޔާ (އަދި ސިފައިންގެ އެންމެ މަތީ ވެރިޔާ) ޑރ. މުޙައްމަދު މުޢިއްޒުއާއި އެމަނިކުފާނުގެ އަނބިކަނބަލުން ފަސްޓް ލޭޑީ ސާޖިދާ މުޙައްމަދު، ނައިބު ރައީސް ޙުސައިން މުޙައްމަދު ލަޠީފް، ކެބިނެޓު މިނިސްޓަރުންނާއި ސަރުކާރުގެ އިސް ބޭފުޅުން ވަނީ ބައިވެރިވެވަޑައިގެންފައެވެ. ރައީސްގެ ދެކަނބަލުންނަށް ޑިފެންސް މިނިސްޓަރު މުޙައްމަދު ޣައްސާން މައުމޫން ވަނީ ހޫނު މަރުޙަބާއެއް ވިދާޅުވެފައެވެ.
މި ރަސްމިއްޔާތުގައި ރައީސް މުޢިއްޒު އަދި މިނިސްޓަރު ޣައްސާން މައުމޫން ޤައުމާ މުޚާޠަބުކޮށް ވާހަކަފުޅު ދެއްކެވިއެވެ. މިއީ ޤައުމު ދިފާޢުކުރުމަށްޓަކައި ހިތްވަރާއެކު ޤުރުބާންވި ބަޠަލުންނަށް ކޮށްދެއްވި ޝުކުރުވެރިކަމުގެ ހަނދާނެކެވެ.
