A new cargo ferry service connecting the Maldives and Sri Lanka is reportedly in the works, aiming to strengthen regional trade and reduce transport costs for essential goods.
According to Sri Lankan media, discussions about launching a dedicated cargo ferry route began during President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s official visit to the Maldives in July. The initiative is expected to gain further momentum when Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu visits Colombo next month, where both governments are anticipated to explore the project in greater detail.
The Sri Lankan government hopes the proposed ferry service will streamline the transport of key goods such as fruits, vegetables, and other perishable products vital to the Maldivian tourism industry. Officials believe the route could provide a faster, more cost-effective option for regional traders, reducing dependency on existing shipping lines and improving delivery times for resorts and hospitality businesses across the islands.
While the concept has generated interest, reports highlight several logistical challenges that could affect implementation. The sea journey between the Maldives and Sri Lanka typically takes around 30 hours, posing potential hurdles for the transport of perishable goods. Additionally, the new ferry service would face competition from established cargo operators already serving the route.
Despite these challenges, both governments are said to view the proposal as a strategic step toward enhancing bilateral trade and regional connectivity.
As of now, Maldivian authorities have not released an official statement regarding the initiative. However, industry observers note that such a route could significantly benefit both nations’ economies if properly structured and supported.
A similar cargo ferry link between the Maldives and Cochin, India, was launched in 2020 during the previous administration but was discontinued in 2022 due to operational difficulties.

ރިޕޯޓުތައް ބުނާގޮތުގައި، ސްރީ ލަންކާގެ ސަރުކާރުން ބޭނުންވަނީ މި ފެރީގެ ޚިދުމަތް މެދުވެރިކޮށް، ރާއްޖޭގެ ފަތުރުވެރިކަމުގެ ސިނާޢަތަށް ބޭނުންވާ މޭވާއާއި ތަރުކާރީ ފަދަ ތަކެތި ފަސޭހަކަމާއެކު އުފުލުމަށް މަގުފަހިކުރުމެވެ. މި ޚިދުމަތުގެ ސަބަބުން މުދާ އުފުލުމުގެ ޚަރަދު ކުޑަވެ، އަވަހަށް ހަލާކުވާ ތަކެތި އަވަހަށް ރާއްޖެ ގެނެވޭނެ ކަމަށް އެ ޤައުމުގެ އޮފިޝަލުން ދެކެއެވެ.
ނަމަވެސް، މި ޚިދުމަތް ފެށުމަށް ބައެއް ގޮންޖެހުންތައް ހުރި ކަމަށް ވެސް ރިޕޯޓުތަކުގައި ފާހަގަކޮށްފައިވެއެވެ. އޭގެ ތެރޭގައި ދެ ޤައުމު ދެމެދު ކަނޑުގެ މަގުން ދަތުރުކުރަން ގާތްގަނޑަކަށް 30 ގަޑިއިރު ނަގާކަން ހިމެނެއެވެ. އަދި މި މަގުގައި މިހާރު ވެސް މަސައްކަތްކުރާ ޝިޕިން ކުންފުނިތަކުގެ ވާދަވެރިކަމާއި ވެސް ކުރިމަތިލާން ޖެހޭނެއެވެ.
މިކަމާ ގުޅޭގޮތުން ރާއްޖޭގެ ސަރުކާރުން އަދި ރަސްމީ އެއްވެސް ބަޔާނެއް ދީފައެއް ނުވެއެވެ.
މީގެ ކުރިން، ކުރީގެ ސަރުކާރުގެ ދަށުން 2020 ވަނަ އަހަރު ރާއްޖެއާ އިންޑިއާގެ ކޮޗިންއާ ދެމެދު ވެސް ކާގޯ ފެރީގެ ޚިދުމަތެއް ފެށުނު ނަމަވެސް، އެ ޚިދުމަތް 2022 ވަނަ އަހަރު ވަނީ ހުއްޓާލާފައެވެ.
